anyone who's been visiting audiosuede v2.o since it's resurrection might remember my first post when i mentioned i would be loosening up this time around and posting some of my own stuff. this might be a good way to ease into that practice a bit.
but the real showcase here and the reason for this post is the track by Woodbridge, VA band Step Aside. a recent post on AVERSIONLINE.COM started the ball rolling. the 6.23.2006 installment featured Richmond, VA post-hardcore band Askance and began a who's-who discussion of sorts in the comments section.
Step Aside were friends with my band, As It Stands, which also appears on this record. we played several shows together back then, usually with Jimmys brother, drummer Tommy Anthony, and his band Case Closed which would more likely ring a bell as Shadowman, as they appeared on the 'Gods Chosen People' lp comp a few years later.
one thing i'd like to point out is that original As It Stands guitarist Craig Moore helped write the song on theis comp but was not given proper credit. we were in the process of a lineup change of sorts and from what i remember things were a bit shaky at that moment. no need to relive that, but it's worth pointing out.
hampton, represent ;)
anyway, you could say that S.A. and A.I.S. kinda hold down the workin' man ethic on one side of this disc. flip the record, however, and it becomes decidely more D.C.
Step Aside featured Askance vocalist Jimmy Anthony (as well as drummer Chris 'Left Foot' Lyman who would go on to play in Mayday with Craig Moore and Lance McLeod of As It Stands) in a decidely heavier environment than the jazzy, mathy and slightly (dare i say) emo leanings of his next outfit. all of those attributes, however, clearly point to Askance guitarist Matt Rankin who is also present on this 1990 compilation.
a band with many incarnations, Device is most likely known for the socio-political, thesaurus-core lyrics of Adam Clay Thompson, a man who (no suprise) is now an award winning journalist. the lineup on this release features Matt Rankin on guitar along with Nathan Camfiord on drums. Nathan would go on to play guitar in this band alongside three Newport News, VA musicians (J. Garfinkel, Ernest Miller and Gut Rochelle) previously of the blistering hardcore band Rebound.
this same exact ensemble of musicians would later go on to write, record and perform as the band Groove with a much different singer. me.
Dunamis...i know absolutely nothing about. enlighten me with your comments.
anyway. hardcore is about as inbred as my hometown, but in a good way. i could probably go on making connections but my head is spinning.

Good grief, dude. I'm good with Richmond/VA band connections, but you just made my head explode. So much new info! Also, in addition to these tracks, I'm super-excited to get the Askance mp3s on aversionline, as I don't have that single anymore. Haven't for a long time, in fact. Awesome.
aversionline rules.
Thank you so much for this classic. One of my all time favorite comps....
How about some Groove. or Trial By Jury stuff? TBJ was such an incredible band. I have a tape copy of the 7", but I remember there being a demo, as well.
thanks. this is awesome.
i always loved the 2 groove 7"s i've got. was there any more released? i may have a song on a comp too, or a cassette tape in a box or something. what was the deal with elizabeth herz? i loved that 7" as well, is there any connection or am i getting my old school "bloodlines" crossed with some other long ago scene? haha.
on a semi-related note, can anybody supply a legitimate list of the output of mayday? i've got a couple things from long ago, but someone said somewhere that there was a cd discography? i cant seem to get a straight answer from the internets.
thanks!
kali:
yr welcome. maybe we were both in the pit at the same time at Safari Club.
apt 13:
that covers it. 2 Groove 7"s, a song on a comp and a cassette demo.
this song is an example of the direction we were headed at the end and likewise what the next release was gonna sound like.
Elizabeth Herz was Device, post-Device. they appear as such on that same comp as Groove as well as a rad 7".
i shot an email to Lance from AIS/Mayday to get you an answer about the Mayday releases. check back here.
happy dependence day eve.

RE: mayday
Body: I KEEP HEARING that people are wanting to get a hold of me to do the discography, might just have to do it my dam self=) L
fuck yeah! thanks for posting these, Chris. I've had that device song echoing in my left eardrum for at least ten years, and though I've long since stopped scolding myself for losing track of my copy of the original, it's nice to find it (along with other seminal inbred tracks by great bands of olde) on your blog.
love to you and good evening, Brad (bradford.goodwin@gmail.com)
Here is a bit of information to add. The connection between Device and Step Aside.
Kevin and Dave (the line up for Device for this 7") went to Woodbridge High School and were good friends with other Woodbridge High School students Chris Lyman and Jimmy Anthony. Prior to all of this, Dave and Chris were in a band called Green Eggs and Ham. GE&H broke up, Chris formed As It Stands and Dave and Kevin went to form Conviction. After one show at Safari Club, Adam Thompson approached Kevin about playing bass for Device. A band from PA, called Transmission, really wanted the name Conviction. Conviction was already breaking up, so Conviction's name went to those guys, Kevin joined Device and recruited Dave to come join as well on second guitar.
We all met Lance through shows at Safari Club. Those Hampton boys would drive a long way for some good shows.
I should know all of this, since I am that same Kevin!
Best regards from NY! » »
